Workshops in Melbourne 2015

5th workshop for 2015, May 16 2015 Feldenkrais Workshop

Gait workshop, Walk tall,

In this workshop we will investigate how your gait, your walking, can become

easier and more efficient by incorporating the natural reflex extension

patterns available to us all (though often negated).

How your gait’s natural process can lengthen your spine, how walking can

extend the thoracic spine, offset the hunching that gravity, ageing and

lifestyle seems to inspire. Part of the “gait as a therapeutic process” and

related to the thoracic workshops, this workshop will offer an elegant way to

lengthen & straighten the spine and reinforce concepts of thoracic mobility while walking.

There will be a related half day Magic towel workshop first Sunday of June.

Ex-tension & the use of the eyes 09/08/2014

09/08/14 11am-4pm A new design & the first time as a workshop – Ex-tension & the eyes : )

In this workshop we will investigate how the use of the eyes can improve and refine the movement of the spine, all of you.  Activating the anti-gravity muscles with a higher degree of harmony and feeling how they want to help you see what you want to see.

Feeling the cooperation in the organisation of orientation. Very cool properties of the nervous system that can seem magical. The eyes organise the large majority of movement for the sighted person and will shape the body over time depending on use. There is not a lot of need for rotation or extension if one only sustains a tight close focus.

Its easy to get the impression that its the most important lesson. (like all the other ones:)

If you are coming and can not wink with (close) either eye let me know. (this might fix your back)

Also, on the 30th of August we will be holding a gait workshop, I’ll send another email out about it.

 Thoracic Workshop July 12th 2014

It’s time for a Thoracic Workshop….

Be there:)

Feldenkrais workshop for July 12th 2014 and it’s the only one I strongly suggest you attend!! If you regularly attend my classes you are probably aware of the importance of the function of the thoracic area. If the thoracic spine area does not contribute to your movement in general, your lower back and neck will have to compensate by overworking and becoming uncomfortable or painful and the culprit (thoracic spine) remains outside awareness quietly lowering our quality of living and skeletal health.

It’s important to me that I give my students the best chance of avoiding the average and very common patterns of degeneration, hyper kyphosis, “dowagers hump” AKA “hunch back”, for most people there is no real hope for correction but for my students of the Feldenkrais method (you:) there is. You know you should, I’ll be back teaching next week and will encourage you again then 🙂 x

Gait / walking to run, a therapeutic process . . .

Let us know if you are interested email by clicking this link.

In this workshop we are going to investigate walking as a therapeutic process, feeling the physics of gait.

Easy gentle explorations of some of the components of walking will be investigated while comfortably lying on the floor as well as in standing.

The bio mechanics of good, easy walking has similar elements    to that of good easy running and generally puts less strain on joints, ligaments ligaments and muscles. If you want to reduce pain or run faster the same refinements are needed

As it will be a small group you will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about improving what you are interested in regarding gait,

how do your knees track? how does your neck respond? what are the elements that help or hinder your running? and what would you like to refine?

These questions can be addressed when we enrich our awareness in the processes of walking by becoming familiar with some of the small details involved

The whole self is involved in walking and can be used not only for transport and exercise but also as a powerful bodily alignment process which is empowering in its own right

We will look into how refinement of walking (gait) can lead to marvellous improvements in many areas of your overall functioning.

Using the the obvious biomechanics realities of the human body and our neurological feed back systems we can discover fluency and ease of movement that is a joy to do and pleasing to see.

Walking, the way to functional improvement.

Thoracic Mobility

it’s time for a Thoracic Workshop….
Be there:)

The first Feldenkrais workshop  focusing on thoracic mobility in 2014 and it’s the only one I strongly suggest you attend!!

You know you should, 🙂 x

It’s been said even the grave cannot “fix” dowager’s hump (hyper kyphosis), but.. the ingenious movements in this workshop will facilitate straightening, lengthening and more movement. These are quite complex issues that are most easily understood at a leisurely pace across at least a few hours.

Trying to get a clear picture in the usual 60 minute lesson is often frustrating and really is not doing Justice to an aspect of ourselves that can have a
profound influence on life quality and skeletal health.

November 9th 2013 Thoracic Workshop

it’s time for a Thoracic Workshop….

Be there:)

Feldenkrais workshop for November 9th 2013 and it’s the one I strongly suggest you attend!!

October 12 Workshop – Rotation

This workshop will be about rotation, twisting & how twisting can reorganise and improve the alignment of the spine and the relationship between the shoulder girdle & the pelvic girdle.

How rotation can soothe and improve almost all of us and how rotation can make walking more efficient and fluent.

Rotation is potentially the fastest & most powerful movement a human can make..

We will also have a look at common ways rotation is used to communicate nonverbally, and a little about what it says about us.

This workshop will be easy to do and leave you feeling marvellous:)

 17 August Workshop 2013

The Jaw & The Shoulders, Two workshops in one.

Two very expressive and some what recalcitrant areas of ourselves.

We will spend the day fostering a better relationship with these two areas, learning to reduce tension, improve accuracy & ease of movement. Generally trying to make peace…

After showing some respect by spending the best part of a day with these areas, getting a clearer picture of the effect on the gait, posture and balance should be possible.

This workshop relates to points of interest that often arise in other workshops

I am really going to try to take it easy in this unique workshop, so I am inviting you to spend a leisurely day enjoying the company of your Jaw, shoulders and curiosity

July 20 workshop Neck – functional comfort

In the July 20 workshop will be investigating the neck and the complex dynamic relationship your neck has with your head, shoulders and chest (thoracic). You will learn to feel what will works better for you.

The neck also plays a vital role distribution of weight and center of mass and so obviously it has a large effect  on balance gait and posture.

This is one reason it is difficult to improve it’s overall functioning as opposed to “getting it fixed”.

It could be said that having the neck “fixed” is a large part of the problem in the first place…

Having said that we will be teaching the simplest most effective ways for you to relieve stress and discomfort from the neck.

It’s been said even the grave cannot “fix” dowager’s hump (hyper kyphosis)

but the ingenious movements in this workshop will facilitate straightening,

 09/02/2013 Developmental Movement patterns
In the first workshop for 2013 (Feb 9)

we are going to start at the start.

We will explore some “developmental” movement patterns,

and investigate how they influence your posture and your gait today.

You have done all the movements before (though maybe in infancy..)

and by their nature the movements are easy, soothing & therapeutic.

This workshop will be a series of easy to effortless movements

that are a joy to do and are common to almost every human

function, on the other hand, when these movements are not

present we often find “mysterious” problems and impaired function

Developmental movements promote a heightened sense of

wellbeing and improve function.

Moving with a sense of ease and having awareness of that ease

is the personification of self respect.

Functional flexibility

December 15, 2012 Feldenkrais Workshop

Improving range of movement by lengthening, differentiating and integrating.
Improving range of movement that is functional, useful and learning how to support this improved organisation with things we all do on a daily basis.

Often it’s the partially contracted (and therefore short) muscles that we are not aware of that add tension and resistance to our movement, our gait, our posture and therefore almost everything we do.

It’s these “shortened” chronically contracted muscles that are often the authors of our less than perfect posture & function.
Habitually contracted muscles are a major contributor to feelings of tiredness, heaviness and lethargy robbing us of spontaneously using movement patterns and positions that can promote mobility, vitality and health.

Sending some de-contraction signals to the right areas can result in more freedom & ease of movement, and a more satisfying relationship with the self.

Throughout this workshop there will be some clear and simple explanations of the principles of “functional flexibility” and how to integrate them into your normal daily activities.

AUGUST ROLLING WORKSHOP 18/08/12 11an – 4pm.

To celebrate the purposes built floor, mk 2, we are holding an easy rolling workshop
The new floor consists of the whole area covered in Melbourne’s largest yoga mat then covered in low density (soft to the face) carpet, This flooring was designed for practicing the Feldenkrais method

Roll in control, authoring movement by negotiating with gravity, balance, sensation and thought. Enjoy the game of relinquishing control to gain competence. We were organically captivated by this luxurious activity as infants and many of the rewards are still available to us. Disorganize the rigidities of modern life & aging and regain some fluidity, flow and flexibility with some of the first movements you ever made!

Rolling on the floor is a marvellous way to promote “re alinement” of your self. We will be drawing from some of the “developmental” movement lessons that are gentle, soft and easy, this workshop will be less challenging than the rolling workshop we held in April.

Let me know if you would like to attend, you can reach me through the link above,

Cheers and Thanks,

Pete Binns

July 7 Workshop

07/07/12 11am – 4pm Feldenkrais Workshop Magic Towel $120.00 Includes audio recording on request

In the July 7th workshop the incredible therapeutic power of the humble towel will be thoroughly investigated. Though the Feldenkrais method is largely about learning it does have a little known powerful, simple and effective way to facilitate dramatic therapeutic change in as little as a few minutes. Its like magic!

The  changes brought about by your use of the magic towel can be used to make your body feel marvellous or elevate many common aches and pains quickly. This is wonderfully empowering because it’s a bit like becoming your own therapist!

We will use the gentle movements of the towel lessons to bring about therapeutic change and improved function to the neck, ribs, thoracic spine, lumber spine and a little with the sacroiliac and hip joints. we will work both lying on the floor and in standing.

Feldenkrais Workshop 19/5/12  11am-4pm The Movements of Respiration (Melb)

May 19 Workshop Breathing.

The movements of your breath, Respiration, BREATHING.

This workshop will be very easy, very very easy. Maybe the most productive day of lying around all day you will ever have.

We started breathing air when we became exposed to the full force of gravity, good breathing and good posture are inextricably linked, from a functional point of view they are almost the same thing.

This workshop will clarify expand and enrich the movements of breathing. It will let you discover ways to breath more easily more fully and enjoy more satisfying breathing, a more quenching breath.

So many parts of us are involved. The ribs, the thoracic spine, the diaphragms, the shoulders, the neck, the center of mass, your center of gravity & your balance. More!

You have conscious control over your breathing and so does your subconscious, a place where there is interplay, a process where thinking can influence feeling and feeling can influence thinking,

Breathing around 900 times an hour, 20,000 times a day 150,000 a week, 7 million times a year, it’s worth spending a day investigating and improving the movements of your respiration.

— SOLD OUT! — SOLD OUT! —

WORKSHOP SIZE LIMIT -16 ONLY!- PLEASE REGISTER FOR CONFORMATION THROUGH EMAIL

Roll in control Rolling Workshop 11am – 4pm 21/4/12
In this one day rolling workshop we will be focusing on the enjoyable and rewarding art of rolling, the primal developmental movements nature uses to facilitate human neurological function and growth. These movement sequences are easy, fun and leave spine soft the body feeling wonderful.
Just as nature rewards babies for exploring and repeating these movements, so too will you enjoy a happy positive outlook, a new lease on life. Rolling is the fastest way to ease aches and pains, its an art form that will serve you for the rest of your life.

The human rolling is truly a remarkable thing, it has the capacity improve balance poise and grace, it elevates aches and pains and facilitates an instantaneous intra-spinal level coordination that is all but banished by our modern environment. Recovering this level of subtle function can have a profound effect on overall functioning and general outlook.

March 17 Neck comfort and function

In the March 17 workshop we will be investigating the neck and the complex dynamic relationship your neck has with your head, shoulders and chest (thoracic). You will learn to feel what will work better for you.

The neck also plays a vital role distribution of weight and center of mass and so obviously it has a large effect  on balance gait and posture.

This is one reason it is difficult to improve its overall functioning as opposed to “getting it fixed”.

It could be said that having the neck “fixed” is a large part of the problem in the first place…

Having said that we will be teaching the simplest most effective ways for you to relieve stress and discomfort from the neck.

Obviously this subject is not simple but to discover some of the mysteries of this area and make improvements the movements MUST be very easy to do… it will be a relaxing day

Functionally integrating the knees by developing awareness of the related structures

In the February 11 Workshop will be investigating the dynamic relationships your knee has with your ankle, your hip joint, your foot and your lower back, the lower half in general. Of all the joints in the body, the knees are said to be the most abused joints of all,(over 40,000 knee replacements Aust 2011!) this is largely because the knee is only a hinge joint so it’s at the mercy of the reciprocal function of the joints above and below. If the hip joint is tight or the ankle is stiff natural & neutral tracking is corrupted and shearing stress in your knee can develop. So how do your knees track & what are some of the elements that influence that tracking? This workshop will give you some strategies to start to have a positive, supportive relationship with your knees.

Advanced “One Side” Workshop Windsor 15/10/11

An advanced one day workshop working with one side only. This advanced Feldenkrais workshop will deeply change the feeling and function of one side of the body only and the differences become a powerful learning experience. You will be free to choose the side.

The effects will last for a relatively long time. Spending a whole day working with just one side will create palpable, observable difference (not necessarily comfortable!) leading to options for choice. Experiencing such difference directly challenges notions of “fixity” in the nervous system, body and self

“The only thing fixed in the body is the belief that it is so” this workshop will let you feel this first hand and is only for people who have attended many of Peter’s workshops and have some awareness of the deeper aspects of the method.

Not for the faint hearted. There is a workshop the following week of a symmetrical general nature at the Melbourne Recital Centre if an antidote is needed….

PLEASE CHECK WITH ME TO MAKE SURE ITS APPROPRIATE.

Lessons relating to general function, coordination and efficiency

On the simplest level, bending, extending and twisting may not seem too profound however they form the background of everything we do and experience and have a much greater say in the quality of life than any possession. If movement is a “pain” so is living.

If all your movements were more effortless and joyful, how would your life be different, how would you be different?

This workshop will be a series easy to effortless movements that are a joy to do and result in a blissful experience of your self that promotes a heightened sense of wellbeing and improved function on almost all planes.

Moving with a sense of ease and having awareness of that ease is the personification of self respect

SENIORS FESTIVAL 3,4,5,6 October 11:30 am MELBOURNE TOWN HALL Yarra Room

Balance and the Chest – Thoracic spine, Ribs & breathing.

Balance matters, Don’t lose it. How’s your relationship with gravity going?

We are going to investigate one of the key aspects of the feeling and function of balance

It truly is one of the most important functions in life and sadly most people leave it entirely to chance..

Balance and posture is an ongoing dialogue between gravity and and our entire system. In this workshop we will explore the feeling of balance and ways to improve it. We will investigate unravelling the postural and movement patterns that can restore or compromise your balance. Looking to restore or improve the subtle balancing movements of the thoracic spine and the base of the neck

The chest, being the largest segment of the body, obviously plays a major role in balance. When the chest becomes ridged, even a small movement creates a large change in weight distribution demanding compensation from other parts of the body, usually in the form of tightening, further undermining balance. Along with the pattern of the “tight chest” comes a limited number of planes for breathing resulting in an increase in weight displacement with every breath, all this leads to an undermining of our movement security and therefore our self confidence & self image

July 16th

We are going to investigate the Thoracic spine & the base of the neck. (C7-T1)
These are quite complex issues that are most easily understood at a leisurely pace across a few hours.
Trying to get a clear picture in the usual 60 minute lesson is often frustrating and really is not doing Justice to an aspect of ourselves that can have a profound influence on life quality and skeletal health

Graceful pelvic movements in walking , Hip Joints & Lower Back

April 9th
Feldenkrais workshop “Pelvic grace”

So much is said about the pelvis being your “power house” that its easy to over look the true value of subtle, elegant & efficient use of the dynamic structures involved.
The hips, lower back, the lower abdomen and of course the breathing are so central to everything we do that the quality of functioning of these areas determines the overall quality of almost everything we do and experience we have!
This workshop will create the opportunity to feel & learn how these complex dynamic structures operate and cooperate with greater clarity, harmony & potency!!

Breathing alters in response to everything, our moving, heart rate, emotions, and even our thinking. These changes in breathing come largely from our autonomic nervous system. It follows, that to reorganise our breathing will give us some control or choice over our autonomic nervous system functioning. When we are excited we generally have slightly higher oxygen levels (in the blood) and when we are relaxed, slightly higher carbon dioxide levels. The many different schools of meditation or breathing techniques can be divided into these two chemical conditions. . The carbon dioxide/ oxygen balance also effects blood ph which, when alkaline, leaves the muscles in a state prone to spasms and cramps. This can result in all kinds of pain and discomfort. Working on the location of the pain will give temporary relief at best but makes cure elusive.

This workshop will run from 11am to 4pm with a break for lunch Cost $120.00

February 19th
Feldenkrais workshop
Feeling the Harmony in movement – “Living (dynamic) balance or Feeling the physics of function”
The ongoing game of dealing with force transmission in the field of gravity is an absolute reality of living, we can call it balance but its so much more, so much more dynamic.
How much muscular effort is really needed to stabilise a joint and what are the trajectories that serve you best? Having some idea about this is obviously valuable.
Sensing the integrity of the bones and joints working in varying degrees of harmony or dissonance.
Movements you are familiar with will be used to to feel the physics of function and the qualities of force transmission.
We are doing it all the time anyway, so we will spend a day immersed in these sensations the great thing is it feels great, taking the time to listen is its own reward!

This all might sound very technical but the doing is easy.
This workshop will run from 11 am – 4 pm. with a break for lunch. Cost is $120.00.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending.

The first workshop this year

Saturday January 15th 2011
-Core Integrity-
The Four big ones, FLEXION EXTENTION ROTATION & THE PELVIC CLOCK When brought together the effect is one of an improvement in your general coordination.
With the idea of starting the year off with functional integrity, directly feeling the benefits of working with your self, not against.
Spending the day using and listening to the spine in such a way that will give you a greater range of movement, better support, better posture and leave you with the understanding that your spine is something wonderful and something to celebrate!
I will be including a CD of movements relating to the content of the workshop on the day.
This workshop will run from 11 am – 4 pm. with a break for lunch. Cost $120.00 (Includes CD)

Saturday 4 December 2010
Working with the neck, eyes jaw and connection with the top of the thoracic spine.
These structures are directly responsible for our perception and expression, and colour our day, every day.
Most people never get a chance to develop options of use of these areas.
In this workshop we’ll be doing just that.
The movements will be easy – by virtue of being minimal, help to develop coordination – which can be enjoyably challenging and have a nice deeply calming overall affect.
The workshop will run from 11 am – 4 pm with a break for lunch. Cost is $120.00

Ease of Walking
Putting a spring in your step in spring.
The seemingly simple act of walking (gait) offers an enormous range of possibility’s to explore, interact with and refine.
Walking can reinforce destructive & degenerative patterns of self use or can be a source of inspirational discovery refinement and regeneration
Walking changers along with our moods can influence our moods and covey them.
A playful altitude and approach to the refinement of gait is a valuable gift everyone deserves.

2010 Saturday 4th September
Awareness in Sitting
When you sit on a chair – do you sit down or do you sit up?
We spend so much time in sitting that it has a profound effect on the overall quality of our organization.
Most people leave the act of sitting to chance and it can have a degenerative effect .
This is a pity.
The act of sitting is a dynamic, vital and potentially a regenerative function,
i. e.. it can be fun and feel great!
In this workshop we will bring some of the wonderful movements from lying on the floor into the vertical plane in a chair.
Please let me know if you are coming, so I can run off to buy a stool for you 🙂
